Top tips for new pet owners

Whether you’re a kid, young professional, or senior citizen, having your first pet is a momentous and exciting experience. No doubt you’ve got your new best friend’s food and bowls, bag of treats, new leash and collar, and shiny toys ready to go. But fun and kibble aren’t the only responsibilities of being a good pet owner.

While lots of love and good nutrition are certainly an important part of pet ownership, it’s also important to consider how your new four-legged friend will impact your home and life, and plan accordingly.

1. Look for a great vet

One of the first things you’ll have to do is find a great veterinarian for your pet, preferably nearby. During your furr-pal’s first check-up, be sure to ask if your vet notices anything about your pal’s health that you should be aware of.

2. Find the best spot for your pet

The best way to help your new pet adjust nicely to your home is for them to get settled into a designated spot. This room or enclosed area should contain their litter box/potty tray, bed, food, and toys.

Pets typically need time to warm up to new people and environments so having a space set aside for your new furry family member is important, especially if you have other pets or children in your household.

3. Be prepared to groom your Pet

All pets need grooming to some extent, so invest in reliable grooming tools because you’ll find yourself using them on your furr-pal every week. Check out our guide on how to groom your dog here.

4. Socialize with your pet often

Socialization is very important for pets, especially for pups and kittens. Allow your new pet to interact with other people, animals, and places during his/her young life so that he/she is less afraid of new people and situations.

If you bring home a kitten, this is especially important since two to 12 weeks of age is considered the prime socialization period.

5. Clean out their litter box/Potty tray every day

Litter boxes/potty trays are convenient, but they can get messy if you don’t clean them out. A simple daily spot cleaning will do the trick. For cats, many litter formulas make it easy to scoop and flush any waste down the toilet. Check out our premium range of cat litter here.

Your furry pal will love you for giving them a nice clean place they can relieve themselves and you’ll appreciate not having to smell the clutter they leaves behind.

6. Pet proof your home

It’s important to pet-proof your home. Make sure that your pet can’t get a hold of any wires, remotes, shoes, or poisonous plants that he/she can chew and possibly eat. These household items can cause potential threats to your pet’s health (and be costly to remove).

7. Start training them early!

Positive reinforcement is the ideal way to train your pet, and you’d be surprised to find how much they can learn! Don’t punish them for bad behavior, instead, reward them for behavior that you want to encourage.

If your furr-pal seems stressed and they start acting out for no reason, visit your veterinarian to make sure nothing is wrong medically.

8. Know the ingredients in your Petfood

Before being enticed to buy the pet food featured in adorable commercials, take a moment to read the ingredients list. Many of these massive consumer branded pet foods include preservatives, like BHT, BHA, and ethoxyquin, and filler ingredients, like meat by-products and corn meal.

Make sure that you are getting a pet food that is made with fresh meat, enriched with vitamins and minerals to support the natural defense system and ensure good digestion.
